If you are intending on keeping the equipment for say 24 months, and then getting new equipment, it might make sense to lease, and let the leasing company take the equipment back after the term of the lease. If it might be something to hold onto a bit longer, it probably ends up being something to purchase outright.

Also, another item to take into consideration is the current cash flow situation. If you cannot afford to put the amount of the purchase down right now, you have no choice but to lease. If you can afford it, it’s better to purchase it, unless you want a possible tax deduction on the interest.

If your new equipment is placed in service (not just delivered to you) in 2009, you start depreciating it in 2009. Otherwise, 2010 becomes the year depreciation can start.

Company signed contract with copier company for 60 months. Copier company is bought out by new company and customer service has decreased to the point where the copier problems are recurring weekly (same problem). Contract just states length of term and that the company is obligated to pay for the full term of lease even if the machine is broken, non-working and etc.. There is no early termination clause. Is the lease contract still binding even though the company we originally signed the contract with has been bought out by another company
