My parents aren’t really helping me with my anorexia recovery. What should I do?

1

Question : My parents aren’t really helping me with my anorexia recovery. What should I do?
I have lost about 30 pounds since December. I just didn’t like the way I looked. I’m actually extremely happy with the weight i’m at now, and think I just need to gain about 5 pounds of muscle. I told my parents that I would be happy to gain weight, if they would work with me. I asked them to buy things like chicken breast, brown rice, and fruit, instead of poptarts, cheese dip and tortilla chips, and white bread like they usually do. I won’t eat much because all they bring home is junk. But they refuse to stop buying the junk food and buy me healthy food.
This morning (on the way to my wisdom teeth surgery), my dad started yelling at me about how I only got hired at my job because my boss wants to get in my pants and said he was taking my car away unless I went to anorexia counseling.
No offense to an therapist/patients, but I think counseling is absolutely stupid. I wouldn’t need counseling if they would just buy what I told them I would eat, so I could gain healthy weight.
What should I do? I’m 19, so luckilly i’m about to go back to college in about 3 weeks at least.
I’m 5’9″ and 109 pounds, btw.
I can’t buy my own food, because I have had two major surgeries this summer and am still in recovery. Thus I have no money.
And I was a perfectly healthy weight last year in college, 120-135 pounds, because I was able to choose my own foods.

I know how you feel. I want to become healthier, but my parents always buy crackers, snack cakes and ice cream, and little to no actual lunch items. The only healthy food option available is fiber cereal, and I would go nuts if I ate nothing but that. No wonder I’m so hungry by dinner time.

I hope you have a better time of it in college. Finally, you will be able to choose what you want to eat.

My mom told me she won’t let me go back to college if I don’t gain 10 pounds by the time we are supposed to start back in 2 1/2 weeks. It’s hard to gain that much weight in that short of time without doing it in an unhealthy manner. My parents are essentially setting me up to end up with a binge eating disorder after anorexia by trying to force feed me addicting sugary/fast foods.

I agree with your idea that you need healthier food.

However, I don’t agree that you do not need therapy. I think you should go to a legitimate good therapist, and that your parents absolutely must go with you, as well as go with you to nutrition counseling. The nutrition counselor will tel them that poptarts are not going to work for anyone, and that they can choose to eat it, but you need something better if you’re ever going to get well.

Also regarding the counseling – it doesn’t sound like you’ve made great choices on your own, so why not see if another person outside your family might lead you to think about better ideas? After all, anorexia is very much a problem with the brain & your thinking processes, so you need couseling of some type for that. If you were diabetic, I would hope you would not think that seeng an endocrinologist would be stupid.

You could point out that chicken, brown rice, and fruit are not very expensive (cheese dip and ice cream are expensive!), and ask them to let them you try it your way for a month.

Your parents are probably worried sick about you – after all, people die from anorexia. At least you know they care.

helping cure anorexia and depression?

Question : helping cure anorexia and depression?
I’ve had depression for a while, I’ve learned to cope with it really well too! I never wanted to take depression pills because I was informed they make you emotionless, basically. I did have some days that where worse then others, but I dealt with it. Now the problem is, I just developed anorexia less then a year ago. I am a guy, and 16, and have lost a ton of weight!! The thing is, I really can’t tell if I’m fat or thin. When I see myself in the mirror, I see a fat person, but when I look at pictures, I see someone a lot thinner. The problem though is, the mirror image automatically makes me worry about my weight. I really never wanted to deal with anorexia, but I can’t help it. I really wished it would go away, but at the same time I want to keep it. I’ve been on soooo many pro-ana websites with their “thinspiration,” and have only become more upsessed. I even have my one guy role model basically. I’ve become sooo mest up, but I can’t get over it. I hate psychologists, however, as I’ve been to too many that really annoyed me. I want to get better, but am afraid to. any tips on trying to recover?
I have been trying to eat more, but it’s not as easy it may sound. I really regret it and hate myself after. If I eat anything with more then a couple hundred calories, I have to exercise.

I was an Anorexic Depressant at 13, I’m now 29 and have really overcome it all. First of all your not fat your very unhealthy if your that thin. Don’t listen to pro-ana websites I’m against them because I was an Anorexic and I would never ever do that again. Although mine was a chemical imbalance in my brain. If you truly want the help you need to see a doctor. You need to eat lots of protein to gain back the weight you lost. Unless you want to end up like me with major joint and muscle problems, teeth decay from being sick and not eating. I wish I could take back the damage I did to my body but I can’t that is why my mission is to save those that I can from doing what I did so many years ago. If you want to talk about it I’m here. But seriously you need a nutrionist to talk to about getting back on a weight gaining diet.
