It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.

One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.

Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

Iowa Women’s Foundation http://www.iawf.org/
New Mexico Women’s Foundation http://www.nmwf.org/guidelines.html

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

I need help getting out of a eating disorder facility- legal advice?!?

Question : I need help getting out of a eating disorder facility- legal advice?!?
I posted this question earlier, but I realized how irrational I sounded- I was a bit worked up when I wrote it. I’m 18 years old and I was diagnosed with bulimia just over a year ago. I’ve been purging for about 3 years. I began purging as a coping mechanism after my close friend died.

I just want to get out so I can go to college next week. When I was admitted in June, I was promised by my parents that I would be out in time for college. Since I’ve entered, my doctor claims I’m “physically declining.” I feel much better at my current weight (would maybe like to lose more) but the doctors are putting me on a meal plan that is completely absurd! I’m 5’3″ and weighed 94lbs when I entered. Now I weigh 86. Although it “sounds” low, trust me, I don’t look that thin. Someone much thinner than me was discharged yesterday! I had always figured that I could leave on my 18th birthday, but when I tried, I was denied and told I was at the facility under a court order brought to the attention of the state by my parents.

I read online that a court order cannot be mandated without the patients’ knowledge/ their presence in court (if possible). I was definitely well enough to go to court and defend myself. I am upset that no one brought this to my attention- I don’t even understand how it could happen without my knowledge.

So, can I get out of here if I bring this up in court? Do I have a case?

no they still won’t let you out because at your height you should weigh between 130 to 155 and the court will see this even if you take it to court

When I was in High School my best friend developed an ED, mainly anorexia, sometimes bulimia. She struggled from 14-20 (which is not long compared to some), it was made mandatory by her parents to go to the doctors every week… She would drink a gallon of water before she went, just to make it look like she was making progress, i.e. gaining weight. Any who.. this went on until she was 18, she eventually checked herself into a hospital at 19 on the urgings of her bulimic boyfriend (he has struggled since her was 12 and is four years older then she). She came out feeling better about herself but went back into the same old routines after a few months. It took her two more tries 3-6 months each. She is now 24 and still struggles everyday but shes in a healthy weight range, she is in good spirits most of the time, her hair is starting to look like it once did and her teeth are slowly being fixed. She knows it was necessary to get help, she was miserable, she was also lucky enough to have many people around that cared and saw the signs right away. Although she is trying to become an actress and this worries us all. So it is baby steps for her anyways.
(as for her boyfriend,,, They are no longer together, just friends. He is actually in a recovery center right now, this is his first trip. He had no choice really, he was hospitalized and very ill.

Answer by midnightmoon62
I dont think public insurance will pay for it at all. Your best bet is to find someone that will finance you, or take a loan. Given that I know what the financial requirements for medicaid are though, no one is going to finance you with that small of an income and nothing to use as collateral.

Do you honestly think that surgery is going to change anything? Out of 11 people that I know who have had the various types of surgery, only 1 has kept the weight off long term. While it is possible for the surgery to give you the oomph to make the lifestyle changes, its comparable to the chances of being a rock star or a movie star. The only way you will loose the weight and keep it off is a long term life style change.

Question : eating disorder facility??
I have been battling bulimia for about 8 years now. I have lost a good amount of weight during the last 12-14 or so. Since then i have pretty much stayed at the same weight. Basically right now i am at the point that all i want is to get better. I realized about a year ago what this is doing to me also my husband. This is the reason i really havent lost anymore weight. But in the same i still throw up once or twice a day. It is no longer in MY control. If i eat lunch and keep it down by 5 my heart is racing i feel queezy and anxious. It just plain out sucks,,,i was wondering if anyone out there has gone to any type of eating disorder facility. I am seriously considering this option..What can i expect if i go? Also i know it is probably pretty expensive, and insurance probably doesnt cover it, so what kind of price did you pay? I really do not want answers telling me the harm, and why i shouldnt be doing this b/c i realize that, i just want to get better, thanks in advance!
