The van will have to be suitable to have one of those scooter lifts in the back. We can only afford up to $ 15K so am not expecting to buy new.

firstly you need to look into regulations for care homes in South Africa. In uk it is the care commission that regulate homes. There may be strict specifications on how many rooms staff, en-suite rooms etc. You need a building firstly, look into numbers of residents, staff required etc before you even advertise.

You will probably have to be passed as a registered care home before advertising for residents.

I live 3,000 miles away from my mother, who has congestive heart failure. My 80 year old dad is caring for her, (yeah, I know – I have a lot to worry about). I’m leaving tomorrow and want to set this up for her. She is in California if that means anything.

I bought a LifeLink emergency alert system back in November, and it’s been invaluable. I just purchase the equipment and program it to call me, my brother, Mom’s neighbor, then 911. The best part is theres no monthly fee involved. Just the 1-time purchase price. I don’t know if I can post their link, but it’s www.callforassistance.com. An elderly lady that I am good friends with has requested that I take care of her for 4 days. This will be 24 hour a day care. I am unsure of what my rate of pay should be. any ideas?

You’ll have to do a thorough analysis of your expenses and desired profit as they relate to the tasks you have to perform. Will you have to do any of her laundry? Definitely have to provide meals 3 + snack or two. Will she just sit in front of the TV all day or will you have to take her outside for a walk/ride. Trips to a doctor? Insurance?.

If you could get about $ 100 per day (includes all services) you should do well. Remember you are giving personal care, not general care for a large group.

I went through a similar situation with my grandmother… after 5 years of taking care of her, she became more than I could handle and required around the clock attention at a facility with other people. She preferred to be in her own place with family members. After a few months, she started enjoying the other peoples company and the activities that were offered. Whether your relative is able to stay in a home situation or not, I would ask neighbors or relatives for references for the caregiver or the center they are being sent into, so you don’t end up in this situation again. Unfortunately, other relatives were sent to certain places were they were left malnourished, constantly unattended and ignored. The only other option is to move them to your place if you are able to provide the adequate care or hire someone to do so in your home. It is never an easy decision any way you decide to go…
