FHA regulations (disability/condo)?
3Question : FHA regulations (disability/condo)?
I am engaged to a man who uses a wheelchair. I live in a condo with a couple steps. He works near me and spends a lot of time at my place.
It is very difficult for him to navigate the steps.and I always have to help.
We would like to put a ramp up…..
We are currently using a portable ramp, but he is not able to maneuver it himself.
There are times he would like to come or go when I am not around to help….and would be able to with a semi permanent ramp…
but he does not live with me
would we b able to assert FHA laws requiring reasonable accommodation
like–in order for me–the home owner to have full enjoyment of my property (havig house guests)–my fiance needs to have adequate access
We would be payig for it ourselves
the bylaws don’t say anything about FHA..
i just think there is a basic ‘we do not discriminate in housing’ statement
even the bylaws they do have they violate
the units are garden style
each with its own entrance\
there is no other accessible entrance
there were a couple FHA violations in the common area in the past. I have a neighbor with a disability, he siad it was a 2 year battle.
the assoc never returns calls and you only get voice mail when you call them
the condos were made in the mid 1980s
He will essentially be living here part time–like its a second home
i don’t want to add him to the deed…if i do we have to pay a $ 1000 membership fee fro him being a new owner
and i don’t think i could make him a renter or tenant..its only 1 bedroom
portable wheelchair ramps

I don’t think management would have any trouble getting around what might take a long time.
Can you not work it out with them?
