Q. How often do I need to recertify my credential?
A. To better ensure current competency and knowledge and thus better protect patients, medical assistants who have the CMA (AAMA) credential are required to recertify every five years. Effective January 1, 2005, all newly certified and recertifying medical assistants will be current through the last day of their birth month in the sixth calendar year following certification or recertification. Current status is required in order to use the credential in connection with employment.
For example: If you certify or recertify in 2005, you must recertify by the last day of your birth month in 2011. To recertify by examination without any break in current status, you must pass the CMA (AAMA) Certification Examination that occurs at least four months prior to the last day of your birth month (i.e., if your birthday occurs in July, you must apply for and pass the January 2011 examination.) To recertify by continuing education without any break in current status, you must submit your paperwork to recertify 90 days prior to the last day of your birth month.

I want actual proof that it is required, b/c I don’t think that it is. I’ve seen ads in the paper for medical assistants that say “will train”.

Yes you do need a certification, for one most employers wont even consider you without one. Also, even with one you will need
at least one year experience for most employers.

I don’t know how they do it in NH but I am a Registered Medical Assistant and it was a fairly easy exam….I did not per say study for the test….I just used what I learned in school….Good Luck

The easiest way to check is on the state of Michigan’s website.
It is usually the Dept of Education that spells out the jobs that need licensing and certification. I know in New York the list of jobs in the health field that now need licensing has grown tremendously.
