Psychology or Theology?

0

Question : Psychology or Theology?
After college I’ll be pursuing a career as director of a residential program that uses horses to minister to high school students struggling with behavioral problems, addictions, eating disorders, etc. I’ve narrowed it down to 4 colleges (1 public & 3 private) and I’ll be double-majoring in Equine Business and either Psychology or Theology (Youth Ministry, Christian Education, etc). My problem is there’s no “perfect” degree for my field. Youth Ministry degrees are geared toward those who will be working as a youth pastor in a church, not out in the field. Psychology would prepare me more for the field and dealing with psychological disorders and addictions, but it wouldn’t give me the theological background or the youth angle. What should I do?
I’m not following a “social trend.” I’ll be working with the Church of the Nazarene to start this ministry. Even if the “social trend” changes, the program won’t. I’m hoping to work for Turn About Ranch (www.turnaboutranch.com) and/or Aspen Ranch (www.aspenranch.com), both Christian facilities, and model what they’ve done to start one with the Nazarene church.

Part of the program will be they’ve gotta choose to come, no one can force them, otherwise the program won’t work. So most likely a devout Hindu or Buddhist person isn’t going to come. Even if they do Christian beliefs will be included in their daily life. Part of what makes Turn About and Aspen so successful is that they teach them how to trust God and make him the center of their lives.

I won’t be doing one-on-one counseling on a regular basis. There’ll be professional psychologists hired for that. I just need to find a degree that’ll give me the background to direct the entire operation.
It’ll also be a program for teens in foster care who may or may not have the same problems as the others but need a permanent home.

Well, I hate to further complicate your question, but “psychology” is hardly one thing either. On one hand, you have behavior psychology that focuses on empirical relationships between contingencies. Cognitive psychology works more from the perspective of shaping thought patterns. Brain based psychology is more about he neurochemical interactions, and inferential psychology is more about social psychology trends.

What I will say is that in theology you will find an inherent problem; specifically that unless you take a broad background in many systems of mythology then you risk only providing partial counsel to your subjects. Yes…maybe the area you work in now is primarily Protestant, but will it always be? Will there some day be a greater Buddhist or Catholic shift in the population? Will you be suitably trained to deal with Islamic or Hindi patients you receive? There is no way of predicting trends like that, so through the theology route you will be perpetually forced to follow social trends instead of setting them yourself.

On the other hand, with psychology it depends more on what you want to do. Do you want to work with people on a closer scale, but then predict larger trends for business growth? If so then inferential psychology is what you want.

Do you wish to make your facility more research based in order to discover new means of helping others? Then behavior psychology is what you want to focus on.

Are you interested in a counseling role as someone who is able to personally make people feel better about themselves and correct their self-imposed harmful patterns? Then cognitive psychology is the way to go.

Best of all, with psychology you can apply whatever (or even several different) faith pattern you need.

Book about two girls with eating disorders?

Question : Book about two girls with eating disorders?
There was a book that I read five years ago, whose title I have been trying to remember. I haven’t been able to find it anywhere.

The book was about two girls with eating disorders, one with Anorexia- and the other with Bulimia-Nervosa.

Soon into the book, the two girls were put into a hospital together for treatment of their eating disorders.

The book follows their time in treatment, and also a short time when they are let out.

In the end, the girl with Bulimia is cured, and the girl with Anorexia dies.

Any thoughts would be very helpful. Thanks!

I live in Shelby and I love my dentist. Dr. Meri in Rochester Hills. Not sure on his pricing though.

If you are tryin to get reduced pricing, check into the local dental schools and see if they do procedures. I know the college of beauty always do cheaper haircuts because they are learning. maybe the same principle applies.
Good luck

Diabetes blood glucose monitor, wtf?

Question : Diabetes blood glucose monitor, wtf?
So Drs tell me I have gestational diabetes. ( diabetes only while your pregnant)
Anyways, They put me on this ridicules low carb diet and i follow it and log it. My numbers are always what the dietricion considers high but other people with diabetes say is okay and not that bad. ( my ob even said ” well those numbers arent bad at all” Anyways- Some days I eat the same exact things and my blood glucose level isnt even close to what it was the last time I ate the same thing….so today I get a little curious and decide to check my blood 3 times in a row with in the same minute.
I only pricked myself 1 time and with the amount of blood that came out there was plenty left to do more strips – so I did.
First try – 138
second try- 148 ( a whole 10 higher)
third try 144 ( back down 4)

Any ideas of why it would do that?
Thanks so much “learning daily” I didn’t think of that. I gave it a try 3 x again but this time with my tester solution ( all the same drop) it went from 134 to 135 to 142.

My dietitian. has been giving me crap because she says my numbers are to high even when there is a 2-5 points higher then she wants- and wants me to take insulin. ( as i mentioned even another dr said that the numbers I had weren’t bad) I swear she just wants me to come in for another 3 hr. class.
I am 32 weeks pregnant. Its not like Ive had this my whole pregnancy.

also i didnt mention that other then seeing my dietician once a week I need to see my ob once a week now and at a totally different place I need to take a 2-3 hour non stress test 2 times a week. That is 4 out of 5 work days to miss and I may not even have GD????

Last night I decided to check it 3 times again just to make sure I wasnt crazy. The thing went from 117 to 140 HUGE Difference. That time I checked on different fingers.

Im not trying to sound like a horrible mom that doesnt want the best for her baby…because I do. But I also want whats best for my family as well meaning I cant miss work or have needles in the house when i have a 3 year old as well.

Ladies: What do you think about this encounter?

3

Question : Ladies: What do you think about this encounter?
This was last night.

I haven’t dated in three years. I live in a college town. It gets worse. Three months ago I had shoulder surgery. This made me even more of a hermit. The medical bills forced me to stay here on spring break.

Its St. Paddy’s Day, and I finally feel recovered enough from the constant pain, so I go to a local bar. What do ya know, my buddy Chris is talking on the two hottest girls when I get there. Even better, he introduces me to the one he is not interested in (of course). She is equally as hot as the other one and they are both very attractive.

She sits down and I initiate conversation. Keep in mind this is the first time I have been out for over three months. I cant even remember what I said. I wasn’t drunk. I only drank two and a half beers in two hours. The maybe ten minute conversation lead into a discussion about majors, of course, and she seemed generally interested in talking to me. She did do the phone check a few times. I went off about how I like art and the stuff I do. I asked her about what she was into. She told me she wanted to do sitcoms. She was a solid nine so it was kinda believable.

I did a few things that were maybe strange. I mentioned that I just had a shoulder surgery. She seemed repulsed. I also pulled out my portable breathalyzer. She seemed unimpressed. It wasn’t awkward really. Just uninspired.

Eventually she said she had to go to the bathroom and before she went, she spent a long time whispering to her friend. She came back sat down with all her body language facing away from me. Then a few minute later they both went outside. She never came back.

What I cant figure out is why. When I was talking to her, she told me that she was the DD. Then right before I left, her friend told her that alcohol doesn’t sit well with her, and that she had to go home and rest. On St. Paddy’s Day? I almost felt insulted. Who is supposed to believe this? (BTW I was cordial to her friend who said that she hope to see me around)

I am actually decently attractive for a guy. Go to the gym 5 times a week. I have this sinking feeling in my stomach. I used to have no problem with girls. Its just been so long and now that I’m 29 and rusty I have seemed to hit a wall. Is it because they can see that I am desperate? I also have had a lot of pain and suffering in the last couple of years like a bad back injury and a recent shoulder surgery. Can girls see that easily? How can I hide it? Did she leave because she didn’t like me? How can I get back in the driver’s seat? Also, what was she whispering and why do girls do that?

Again. Beauty isn’t everything. Well if she looked repulsed when you told her about your surgery, then she left, I guess she got disinterested. Sounds a little b*tchy to me. Forget about her. There are alot more girls who are just as attractive and look beyond disabilities. Dont let it damage your pride, it’s probably her loss anyway. Just keep looking around, you can get better.

I am so overweight?

4

Question : I am so overweight?
I am 5’6″ 18 year old girl.

I used to be 130lbs but over the period of 5 years, I gained 35 pounds and I am now 165lbs. Mostly because I was depressed and also, very up-and-down with anorexia problems.

My body is now wrecked with stretch marks that I could have prevented, I am very, very out of shape, I have spider veins, and I feel disgusting.

The only way I know how to lose weight is starving, because I still have not gotten proper treatment for my anorexia/bulimia issues. I can’t NOT starve, but I never make it til the end, so I end up overeating and gaining more weight.

What do I do? I feel hopeless in this cycle. I have no self-esteem whatsoever.

What would happen if I starved until I lost 30 pounds? What would happen to my body? Since I am 18, will my skin sag or will it be okay?

Please don’t try to convince me otherwise, or call me stupid. I’m not looking for that, I’m just looking for the facts.

Do you still owe the hospital money?

The refund is sent to whoever purchased that pacemaker from Medtronic – which is likely, the hospital. They turned around and charged you for it, but they originally purchased it. If you have a balance on your account with them, they’re not going to send you any refund for that pacemaker – which, if you didn’t PAY for, should go to your insurance company, anyway.

Question : Please help me w/ these questions….?
Your position is the business director for a large medical supply company. You provide medical supplies to medical offices as well as hospitals throughout the country. You have been asked to provide a projection for business in the next five years. What economic tools would you use to provide projections for future business, what products might be needed and the type of personnel the company will need for the future? Currently the company not only sells products but provides training to doctors and hospitals on the technology used in some of the medical equipment you sell and lease to the medical community. Also, what projections would you provide the strategic team as for the potential business picture – using economic indicators, would your business likely grow or are you in a decreasing market?
