Can I sign myself out of a psychiatric hospital when I turn 18?
Question : Can I sign myself out of a psychiatric hospital when I turn 18?
I entered treatment at Laureate in Oklahoma for anorexia in August when I was 17. In 11 days I will turn 18. I am not sure, but I think I now have the power, not my parents or the facility. Adults in the adult program can sign themselves out so can I, as a legal adult in the adolescent program, terminate my treatment? References if you have any would be great.

Don’t do it. You are there for a reason. Anorexia is a serious disease and needs treatment. Please don’t sign yourself out. You will regret it.

The criterion is if you are a danger to YOURSELF or others to be held. My concern, of course, and I am sure that of your family and perhaps the facility, is the danger to you. People die of your condition, so your safety is paramount.
The thing to do is to ask them there. Once you are a legal adult, probably some conditions do change, but please treat your health as #1.

no you cannot unless the doctor his or herself thinks you can manage it. prove to them that you are on the path to a new life, have made changes for the better, and are eating again.
Although you are 18, u cant just sign yourself out. You see the others signing themselves out because they either signed in voluntarily and are leaving against doctors orders, or they asked the doctor and the doctor is letting them sign out on their medical advice.
You are there for a reason, and the doctors job is to keep you safe. If you were to get released by them and you died or killed yourself from your issue, the doctors would be under review and could have there medical licence taken away and spend time in prison. so your not only affecting your life, your affecting your family friends AND your doctors.
Good luck, and just prove to the doctor you have changed, ask them what you should do if you need help, and you will get out soon

i been in treatment before im only 15..you really need to stay life only gets better trust me..and maybe your not in the right program for you i went to the mayo clinc and they watch your fat and calories because they don’t want you to get fat…they just work with the emotial side not so much the weight..please push your self..giving up will get you no where in life expect dealth..im so much happier i can actually do things with friends..its hard it still takes me three hours to drink something but im getting their keep you head up and keep going never ever give up thats my model..i went from heart failure to happiness
