Is there stronger, better diabetes medication than metformin?

Question : Is there stronger, better diabetes medication than metformin?
I’m on 2000 mg a day, but it doesn’t seem to work consistantly.
I’m not overweight. I could probably lose 10 – 15 pounds to make myself happy to be the same weight as I was at when 18.
I already eat half the carbs my dietician put on my meal plan and I get on a treadmill everyday, but the weekends because I’m yard obsessed.

2000mg is a standard med and dose. More could be prescribed
Insulin is the next step if still not controlled

While in My opinion metformin is considered one of the best medicines for effectiveness and price

See your doctor! I went from Metformin to Actos to Januvia/Metformin (100/500) to Janumet (50/500). The Actos worked fine, but I gained weight. Taking two pills at different times a day was bad enough but then my insurance company refused to pay for it. They just OK’d Janumet and so far my readings have been around 150, when Actos readings were seldom over 120. But now the problem is that I haven’t lost weight, I’m eating the wrong foods, and I don’t get enough exercise.

My husband was on ActosplusMet but is did not work for him so he went to the Dr and was switched to a medication called Januvia. It works great for him. It works different from the other medications like metformin. It stimulates your pancreas to produce more insulin. It keeps sugar levels down after you eat but your sugar does not drop during the day if you do not eat. He takes this with Actos also. Januvia is a great medication and a newer medication but if you do not have insurance it is pretty pricy. I would check it out. See if you are a candidate for it. Check out this website.

I’m sure your doctor told you this but Metformin only works if you change your diet and exercise. It is not a magic pill that drops your blood sugar. You have to work at this. Develop an exercise program for 5 times a week (at least 30 minutes a day). Stay under 1500 calories a day (for women). If you focus on those two things as well as count your carbs, you will see a difference.

Doses greater than 2000mg are better taken several times a day. This is a standard med and dose. More could be prescribed, but if this isn’t working consistently, insulin is often the next step. Even though metformin is older, it is still considered one of the best meds for effectiveness and price.

Metformin is pretty good. Are you taking it for diabetes? Are you overweight? How old are you?

There are lots of medications for diabetes, but whether they are right for you is a question for your doctor.

Some of the stronger diabetes medications cause weight gain. Metformin tends to cause weight loss. Losing weight is the #1 thing you can do to help you with your diabetes.
