How hard is it to recover from an eating disorder?
Question : How hard is it to recover from an eating disorder?
I am going to start seeing an eating disorder specialist next week and eventually do a partial hospitalization program possibly. How hard is it to recover from anorexia or an eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS)? Does the therapy really help? What exactly happens in treatment that helps? Do they make you force yourself to eat?

To be perfectly honest I’ve never had an eating disorder, but this piece of advice is universal:
Anything worth doing is hard.
I’m going through the same thing. I’m in a eating disorder program and it’s very difficult. I have to drink 4 weight gain supplements every day and I have to finish all or most of my food or I have to write 2 pages on what i was feeling at the time. I have very supportive peers though that are going through the same things. I’ve also been in the hospital with a feeding tube because I almost died. Therapy for me has helped but it really depends on the patient/therapist relationship. In my treatment program we have all different groups like Body Image, Nutrition, Yoga, Self Care and Spirituality. I’ve had anorexia for about a year and it’s truly an addiction. It’s a much more difficult addiction than alcohol or substance abuse because an alcoholic doesn’t need alcohol to survive but people need food to survive. I wake up every morning and try to make it through the day and it is a challenge. If you want your health and life back and want recovery, then go for it! I just want to say that it takes hard work and determination but you can do it. Have faith.
