What is an effective and safe migraine medicine I can take when trying to conceive?
Question : What is an effective and safe migraine medicine I can take when trying to conceive?
I was recently diagnosed with what my doctor called a “textbook case” of migranes. I do not need preventative medication as they are not that frequent (maybe once per month). He prescribed Maxalt which is working well but I’m not sure if it is safe if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
migraine medicine

That’s something you should ask your doctor. The strongest thing I was told that I could take during pregnancy was Tylenol regular strength. That’s not anywhere near strong enough to cure a migraine.

I agree with Mommyof3girls. I would try to avoid taking Maxalt if you are in that 2 week window of not knowing if you are prego or not. However, if you do have a severe migraine in that time, I don’t think one Maxalt would make that big of a difference, I just wouldn’t keep taking them once you knew. I too suffer from Migraines that I took Amerge and Maxalt and Imitrex for and also have torn disk in my back for which I take Mobic (anti-inflammatory medicine). The bizarre thing is although you can not take Migraine medicine or anti-inflammatory, you can take narcotics such as Lortab or Tylenol 3 (who would have EVER thought that was the case!!!). You should ask your OBGYN to prescribe you this should you have a severe headache during pregnancy. However, I would only take it if it is so severe you can’t take the pain. Good luck and I hope you don’t have headaches during pregnancy, I don’t think I had many, my main problem during pregnancy was my back.

I’ve had migraines as long as I can remember… I’ve taken Maxalt, Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax – they’re all about the same and do the same to an unborn baby. It’s safe while you’re TTC, but very unsafe while you’re pregnant. Since you have no way of knowing if you conceived or not until you’re already 2 weeks along, I would only take them if very necessary during the first part of your cycle before you suspect ovulation. I think there are some safer alternatives you can talk to your doctor about, but in my experience not much else helps as far as medicines if it’s truly a migraine. Fortunatley for me my migraines eased up while I was pregnant – all 3 times! Good luck to you!

While trying to conceive???? You mean some women actually are telling the truth when they say “I have a headache”?
Do you only get headaches before the activity? I gotta say, don’t bother conceiving, because you won’t be married very long. No man is going to put up with that “I gotta headache” stuff.
Further, do you think kids are going to be a bowl full of cherries? What do you think is going to happen after you conceive and have the baby? Your headaches have just begun, sister.

I don’t know of any oral med that is safe to take while pregnant, but the Migraine Headon, that you just roll on your head like a chapstick is safe. It doesn’t get rid of the headache, but it takes enough of the edge off that I can run my errands and get through my day.
