What is a simple and inexpensive Blood Sugar Monitor?
Question : What is a simple and inexpensive Blood Sugar Monitor?
I am at risk for diabetes but do not have it yet, my boyfriend does have it but only gets tested at Dr’s appointments and is not interested in testing at home. I would like to start monitoring myself and if it simple and painless, he may decide to try it also. Would like something basic, easy to use and inexpensive….can anyone recommend one? Please don’t ask me to ask my Dr. or Pharmacist, I am interested in actual users opinions. Thanks!

Hi,
You probably won’t like my answer but the machine is the least of your costs. You have to buy finger lancet (to prick your finger) and test strips that can only be used once.
Accu-Chek has one of the least painful processes, but there is nothing pain free. The OneTouch is not bad either.
There are often programs that give free machines – they do that because they make their money on the test strips!!
So the question is how controlled is your boyfriend’s sugar. If his doctor isn’t telling him he needs daily checks that means he is well controlled.
As for you, there are periodic health fairs run by medical facilities. You can get a free test 1-2 times a year that way.
Wal-Mart’s Reli-On brand one is inexpensive and easy, and Walgreens and other major drug chains have a similar one under their generic brand. The pharmacist can direct you…they cost about 30% less.
