Simulation Migraine
The spatial-temporal development of the visual field loss during a migraine attack with aura. The film is based on a simulation based neural network of brain activity. (See Dahlem, MA et al. (2000) Eur J Neurosci. 12:767-770. & Dahlem, MA and Mueller, SC (2003) Biol Cybernet. 88:419-424).

Like many comments mine are similar but with colors. Before the aura I loose the central part of my vision. It doesn’t go black, rather, it just integrates the surrounding area. So, when I look at someones face, it appears that they are missing an eye, nose, or whatever I’m looking at. Thankfully, I get no headache.

I’ve never got this but it is vagualy similiar to “seeing stars” that I get a lot because of rather low blood pressure (it even includes headache often, but exists a very short time of few seconds). I am also pretty sure that the flashing presents the difference between both eyes of the viewer, like when you put your hand in front of your other eye, the hand is not transparent, but is more realistic on one screen when presented with something like it being flashing.

It’s different for everyone, but i always knew i was getting a migrane because I wouldn’t be able to read properly. At school, we used whiteboards, and whenever I wanted to read the text on the board, it would sort of white out, so I could see everything in my peripheral vision, but not the text I was looking at.
Anyway, interesting video.

Mine are more zigzag patterned and always yellow. Slowly my vision on the right side starts to fade, everything disappears. The aura part isn’t that bad, sorta fun actually, but it’s impossible to enjoy because nausea and the sensation of being repeatedly shot in the head with a nail gun soon follows.

@ofeyofey The simulation is based on population code that translates cortical feature maps into a visual perception. If this means nothing to you, there is a paper about it see: Dahlem, M.A. et al. (2000) Eur. J. Neurosci. 12:767-770.
In short, you could also say it is within the field of computational physics. Colour is missing as this was not part of the cortical feature map but this is just a limitation of our approach and in principal it could and should be coloured.

Wow! Very close to what I get! Mine are black & white like this, but more sharply contrasting. Also, the area swept by the aura acts like the blind spot – if I take paper & a marker, dot the paper & focus on the dot, then mark the paper when I can’t see the marker tip, I get a picture of a large area that is temporarily blind. Also, during an aura, I have trouble reading – even when I can see the letters perfectly, it’s difficult to translate them into words.

Yes. I agree with many others here that it is very close also to my experience. Mine, too, are coloured—like internally lit and glowing. Mine also appear to twist or roll like a worm. The arc either eventually closes or becomes like a nautilaus shell and spreads to the edges until it disappears. Visual aspect of migraine usually lasts 12 – 15 minutes and then I have 10 minutes before the pain begins.
Feverfew has reduced the frequency, duration and pain level—aura remains unchanged.

excellent depiction – one of the closest i’ve seen to what i experience (really only minor personal differences) – thank you for posting this – it’s amazing that you haven’t experienced one of these yourself given how accurate the depiction is
