What impact has the hepatitis C have on the brain?

What impact has the hepatitis C have on the brain? I have only recently diagnosed and I’m worried that my virus can my future education and career plans affect. I am very concerned that I suffer brain damage and, therefore, lose the functioning and / or storage. I am aware of the damage to the liver, and I was also asked whether the infection of the liver has no correlation with brain impairment.

I am a Certified Nutritional Therapist, not a MD and have HCV. From a functional perspective, if your liver isnt working properly and not producing bile to help you absorb and use Essential Fatty Acids your brain could be in trouble. It only takes a quick google search on EFA’s to see how important they are on brain function and health. All the Fat soluable vitamins will become in short supply. Although this is generally brushed off as unimportant and most people would never connect the dots. Use what every you can, to support you liver functioning.

I’d simply like to add to the first poster:

HCV affects the brain whether or not you have severe liver damage or not. HCV can cause fog like symptoms that medicaton only makes worse. It can cause depression, bi-polar illness as well as several other diseases that affect the brain as the first poster stated.

How do I know? Simple…I acquired hcv infection at age 8 (if not younger as I had several risk factors, ie, three surgeries and dental visits prior). My symptom (first physical one) was spider nevi. Second my bones/joints began to hurt at age 12. At 13 I began the psychologist and by the time I was diagnosed I was sleeping 18 hour days. Hardly what I call living.

Ask about treatment now, the earlier you treat, ie, lower the viral load the better the chance at a sustained viralogic response and thus, lessens the chance of some diseases associated with hcv that are not reversable even if you are a responder.

This is in the worst cases:

Hepatic encephalopathy (sometimes hepatoencephalopathy) is a potentially-reversible neuropsychiatric abnormality in the setting of liver failure, whether chronic (as in cirrhosis), or acutely. It can be diagnosed only after exclusion of other neurological, psychiatric, infectious, and metabolic etiologies.

With severe liver impairment, toxic substances normally removed by the liver accumulate in the blood and impair the function of brain cells. If there is also portal hypertension, and subsequent bypassing of the liver filtration system of blood flowing in from the intestines, these toxic substances can travel directly to the brain, without being modified or purified. Signs can include impaired cognition, a flapping tremor (asterixis), and a decreased level of consciousness including coma (hepatic coma or coma hepaticum), cerebral edema, and, ultimately, death.
