Technical theatre students will do stage management (at least, on most courses), lighting, sound, props, set and wardrobe, but I don’t know of any technical theatre course where you get to direct. However, any technical knowledge you gain will stand you in good stead when you’re directing – if you understand what your lighting designer has to do, then it makes life much easier.
Everything you learn about lights, sound, costumes, and sets will help you as a director. Actors can concentrate just on acting, lighting designers can concentrate just on their lights, and so on. But directors have to oversee every aspect of the show.
