Should I Powerbar gel before running a race?
I would like full of energy before I (view it will probably run a 3 or 5 miles)

I have taken the gel before a race and it may/may not help. There have been times I’ve taken it that I’ve felt tired and crappy during a race and times I’ve felt great. It depends on the consumer. Personally, I feel almost “fake” if I take an energy gel before every race. I feel like its not me doing the work, somehow. There is nothing wrong with taking them, they can help, but my advice is to only take it if you really feel like you need extra energy, don’t get used to taking it before every race, its expensive, and unnecessary.

Too early.
At the beginning of the race, your body should have plenty of storage of carb (assuming you have carb loaded the evening before and had some breakfast before the race). Your carb reserve will run out after 10-15 minutes, at that time your body will switch to fat metabolism. The only organs that would need carbs are your brain and your heart, which will use the little carb produced in your liver – so you will not die even when your carb reserve runs out. The rest of the body will do fine without any carb, so technically you really don’t need any Gels or Goos.
If you take your Goo before the race, it will do you no good, since you will have plenty to carb already to use. You should use it only after a distance. If I were you, I would not use it until about miles 4 to give you a boost for that last sprint to the finishing line.
When I run marathon, I never use any Goo until mile 16-20. To me, it would be a waste before that. Instead, I like to use Powerade drinks or Gatorade drinks, both of which has some sugar in the solution for my body to use.
