Meditation is basically deep contemplation. Some meditate while thinking about something, otheres practice meditation by clearing their minds completly of thought.
You could probably meditate while performing yoga.
Some believe that physical motion distracts meditation, but there are those that practice meditation while walking.

Yoga is more like a discipline of acquired mental and physical occult skills. Meditation is more like a practice that can transcend the occult, spiritual, medical, therapeutic boundaries. In that sense there are many more totally aware and enlightened people around you than you think, from all walks of life.

True, in my experience also, many Westerners have only one understanding of the word "yoga": to practice asana.
Regarding your first question, in the broadest sense, meditation IS yoga (if thinking of word yoga as union).
However, asana is something I do to prepare the body and mind for extended seated meditation.
