I always have some on hand, but rarely have to use it. My daughter has been a real healthy child, for that I am blessed and grateful.

nothing wrong with letting him fend off minor illnesses, it will boost his immune system:)
with my daughter, when she has a temperature or when she is in pain (drawing her legs into her stomach) or just wont settle and needs something to help, ill give her something like calpol.

i hardly ever give my son any medication unless he absolutely needs it….he is just getting over a runny nose and congested cough…never ran a fever..the cough has slowly gone away on its own…the only thing i do give is tylenol and that is when he has a fever of 101 or more, but technically the doctor has told me not to give tylenol or motrin unless the fever is 102 or more

The thing is, there IS no medicine that can help a person fend off the common cold…because modern medicine cannot cure the common cold. All medicines can do is help relieve symptoms and make a person more comfortable, their immune system is still doing all the work in fighting the infection. So, I don’t see anything wrong with using cold medicine so that my kids can be more comfortable and get some rest when they are sick…especially since that is exactly what they need to get better.
Of course, I’ll try more home remedies first…steamy showers, chicken soup, heating pad for aches and pains…but if they just aren’t content, I don’t feel the slightest bit bad about some cold medicine.

I barely use medicine on myself. I’ll give the kids medicine if they have a fever (101+), if they are coughing so much they can’t sleep at night, or if they are just lethargic on the couch from illness. They have also been getting a lot of ear infections, so I’ve had to give them antibiotics. That is one thing that bothers me, but the ear infections seem to come on for no reason and last forever if I don’t give the antibiotics.

I do the same, it’s a rare occasion when I’ll give medicine for anything, especially minor things like colds and sinus stuff. Mia takes allergy medicine and an inhaler every night, which technically we could use all the time, but I prefer not to. We switched to Benadryl, so that calms her down a little bit at night and makes it easier for her and her sisters to relax and fall asleep quickly.
Hannah gets really bad headaches and I’ll give her Tylonol for those. I used to get migraines a lot so I can’t help but defy what I usually do in those circumstances.

I’d love to say that I rarely give her medicine but I’m too afraid to let her fend off the minor illnesses for herself.
The last time I let her try to find off a cold by herself she ended up in huge dependency again.
Normally for a fever she just gets a tepid bath and then some time to sleep it off. With colds I give them 2 – 3 days just incase her immune system does kick in, and then when / if it doesn’t I start giving her calcold for it.
If she had a normal immune system I wouldn’t medicate for the cold either.
Generally I only give her Calpol or neurofen if she’s in so much pain she’s crying and they’re not crocodile tears, otherwise for headaches and the like she just gets some quiet time and if she needs to time to sleep it off.

I like using other things first to make my kid comfortable. Before bed, a warm bath (even using a vapor bath) that can help drain the sinuses. A rinse of saline cleans out the sinuses. I also like using the vapor plug ins to keep the sinus cavity clear. My son tends to get sinus infections if I don’t help keep him clear.
A mild fever I’ll let go unless he’s really miserable with it. I try to listen to my kid’s body if possible and treat accordingly.
That said, I don’t think I’ve given him a fever reducer in over a year.
