Some sleeping medication like Ambien or Lunesta require a prescription from your doctor.
If you just want to try over the counter medication though then they are two different ones you can try. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is an antihistamine but it also commonly used to help people sleep. Doxylamine is also another antihistamine that is used to help people sleep. Both of these drugs can be found by themselves or with other drugs in products like NyQuil, Unisom, and Tylenol PM.
There are other herbal products you can take too like Melantonin.
I personally take doxylamine alone and it works great for me. Diphenhydramine causes anxiety for me so I don’t like it as much. Good luck!

You say you have a hard time falling asleep. Is this your only problem, or do you also have a hard time staying asleep? Are you drowsy during the day?
If you just need help falling asleep there are a few options for you:
Benadryl is OTC and can help you fall asleep. However, if you take it for more than 3 nights in a row you get “rebound insomnia”. So it is best to use only on occasion. Also, doses greater than 25 mg can sometimes leave you groggy the next day. Make sure you take it 30-60 minutes before bedtime.
Melatonin (OTC) can also be used to help you fall asleep. The issue with melatonin is that it is considered an herbal and therefore not regulated by the FDA. Because of this, I advise asking your pharmacist to recommend a brand he/she knows is reputable.
Good sleep hygiene is VERY important. Only sleep and have sex in your bed. Do not exercise late in the day (exercise early in the day does help with sleep). Set a bedtime you can stick to. Do not perform tasks that require a very active brain for at least 30 minutes before bed (homework, studying, bill paying, etc).
I would advise against valerian or other “herbal sleep compounds”. Also, alcohol can interfere with sleep (and of course, caffeine etc can).
There are various prescription sleep aids. If you feel you need these please talk to your doctor. Give them as much information about your symptoms and patterns as you can.
