Question : Can porcelain crowns be shortened after they are cemented in?
I want my porcelain crown shortened so its the same size as my canine, can it be shortened. Its been cemented in my mouth for a year. Is it bad if the permanent crown is shaved.

Your dentist should have caught this at the beginning I’ve personally had my bite adjusted where they filed down crowns a little but I don’t think as much as you are talking about. Go back to the dentist and tell them it’s bothering you and ask them to make it even. You paid for it, they owe you a service.

Porcelain crowns may be shortened even after cementation but there is a slight chance that it my chip or crack just like any other ceramic (i.e. drilling a hole into a bathroom ceramic tile to place a towel bar for example). Depending on how much shorter you want to make the crown, you need to also determine whether it is a Porcelain fused-to-metal crown or a Metal free Ceramic Crown. If the crown has a metal substructure then if you take off too much porcelain, you may begin to expose the metal layer underneath the porcelain. Generally speaking, there is usually about a 1-3mm thickness of porcelain above the metal substructure.
Shaving off some porcelain is not uncommon and is not bad if done properly.
