Why is anorexia only manageable and not curable?
Question : Why is anorexia only manageable and not curable?
Why isn’t there a cure for anorexia? You get stressed out you lose your appetite. That’s not your fault that is how your body reacts to stress, If you eat when you are hungry and only hungry and maintain your weight then why is it such a bad thing that people are anorexic from time to time during stressful periods. It’s not like we are killing ourselves faster than people that overeat and that are overweight.

“It’s not like we are killing ourselves faster than people that overeat and that are overweight” Remember Karen Carpenter (maybe not)
Anorexia is not like most other diseases. It is an emotional/psychological disorder. All psychological disorders are extremely hard to treat and for all intense and purposes, impossible to cure. Like alcoholics say, once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.
Anorexia is best described as a self-image and self-loathing problem. I have talked to a lot of very beautiful women who, no matter what anyone told them, thought they were extremely ugly and overweight. It is not that they just fasted for a day or two. They had prolonged time of eating disorders such as eating too little, exercising too much, vomiting, taking weight control products, etcetera, in an attempt to lose weight unnecessarily. I knew one women who drank Ipecac at least 4 times a week.
Often, anorexia is accompanied by depression. While we have wonderful meds for depression, there is little we can do for the anorexia. Long term psychotherapy is the only way to manage it.
Unfortunately, the danger is that not only to they lose fat, they also lose muscle… including damaging their hearts. The damage to the heart is often irreversible.
It is hard to say whether or not your fasting to lose weight is a sign that you are anorexic but be careful. Look at a weight chart to see if you really are overweight and ask a doctor for guidance in losing weight.
