Something medium. Too much cold exacerbates asthma, but so does too much heat. Start at a medium setting and try gradually to turn it down until you see signs of difficulty, and then turn it back up a bit. Helps with asthma and conserves energy too. Can’t give you an exact number because I don’t know how your kids will react to each temperature setting. I’d probably start at 70-72 degrees and try to take it down from there. However if they are coughing at that point, I’d take it up a bit and see if they improve. Bear in mind they might be reacting to other things besides the temperature. Usually in winter allergic asthma is reduced, but there could be indoor allergens still present that cause them to react. You need to be sure you’ve eliminated all of them.
From my own experience, I can tell you that it should not be above 68. I have had asthma since I was 9 years old. I’m 53 now. The best advice I can give you is to try to keep the temperature constant. Changing temperatures can bring on attacks. If it’s cold outside, make sure their chests and heads are warm. This always has helped me.
