I’m not quite sure who gets paid more but have heard that there are not supposed to be too many jobs for the medical assistant (or medical biller or coder) despite what those private $ $ schools say. The MA course though should provide instruction about phlebotomy techniques.
If still interested in receiving training, please look into the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non credit course) as long as it’s accredited within the industry.

General info on MA: http://www.bls.gov/oco and search ‘medical assistants’ (nothing for phlebotomists per se but laboratory technologists though lab techs usually have more training) or such.
Please also steer clear of online, for profit schools such as penn foster, stratford career, us career, capella, university of phoenix and others: http://www.capellauniversitysucks.us

I have no idea why people answer questions they no nothing about. There are a ton of jobs for Medical Assistant just like what those technical schools tell you. Why? Because that is who you are seeing when you go to a doctor’s office. They are the ones taking your info, vitals, calling you back, calling the pharmacy for refills getting authorizations for procedures. Now when you talk about the phlebotomy part that one is much harder to get a job in. ANd not because no one is hiring. The reason why is because companies want you to have 2-3 years experience, can’t get the experience unless you get the job. Phlebotomy tends to pay more. The reason I know these things? I work in doctor’s office as a phlebotomist. I am trained as a Medical assis tant but chose to go to the phlebotomy side instead of the ma side. I really enjoy my job. THe pay not the greatest but also has to do with where my location is. Some phlebotomist can start out at around $ 15 an hour. Hopefully this helps some.
