Question : student stands on a scale in an elevator at rest on the 64th floor of a building. The scale reads 834?
As the elevator approaches the 74th floor, the scale reading drops as low as 755 N. What is the acceleration of the elevator?
floor scale

Best answer:

Answer by bolexisist
first find the mass of the person, when the elevator is at rest the only acceleration is that of gravity

F = mg
834 = 9.81 m
m = 85 kg

next, when the elevator is moving the accel of the elevator is pointing up, while the accel of gravity is pointing down, so the total accel is the difference between the two

F = m(g – a)
F = mg – ma
755 = 834 – 85a
a = 0.93 m/s^2
