Because chemotherapy is when a patient is given chemicals and medicine strong enough to kill cancer. Therefore it can do a number on other parts of the body.
Chemotherapy can cure cancer, so the side effects are tolerated. They usually include extreme tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, and apathy. Of course there is the hair loss, which can cause some distress.

Most medicines have side effects to them, and medications used for chemo are very strong. Also, they target all fast-growing cells, not just cancer cells, which is why many patients lose their hair, become anemic (red blood cells), and become more susceptible to disease (white blood cells). All of these are fast growing cells. There are many different types of chemo, which explains partly why people with different types of cancer have different side effects. For example, I had colon cancer, and the chemo I took didn’t make me sick and I didn’t lose my hair (but it thinned). I just had a few weird symptoms that were almost universally due to one medicine.
