Question : Planning an extended stay in Egypt, how is the medical care there?
I am an American girl who just got engaged to an Egyptian guy. I am planning to visit Egypt in the near future to meet his family. I might be staying there for 2 months maybe more. His family lives in Doqqi to be exact. I also suffer from Juvenile Diabetes. How is the medical care there? Is there easy access to insulin and my other medical supplies? Is the bottled water clean over there? Please let me know, so that I can plan accordingly.

poor, the pharmacies are OK but for anything truly serious my parents go to Canada or the US to get treated properly

For BASIC medical care its ok…your situation should not be a problem…but Ill tell u a quick story. I had a small growth on my wrist, I went to the “top” dermatologist there, he said it was like a sore and gave me some cream. It didnt get better, came here (USA) and was immediately told it was skin cancer! All the best, just be careful and get several opinions on any medical issue u might have…

Yes, very easy access to Insulin, infact, I read 2 days ago in Al Ahram (most circulated newspaper in Egypt) that Egyptian doctors used a new technique in treating Diabetes, there’s easy access to 330 ml bottled water, 1.5 LE each (30 cents) you could buy a water filter from the US or UK and use it on the sinket to get fresh healthy water, else there’s nothing to worry about.

The good thing about Egypt is you can go to a pharmacy and get just about anything without a Rx. Do bring a written Rx from your doctor. Have your fiance go with you to the pharmacy. Most pharmacists do speak English. If there is a problem your fiance can take you to any hospital to see one of the doctors who can write you an Rx if necessary but getting insulin is easy here and cheap. Bottled water is very good here now. Even the drinking water isn’t so bad although most people have filtering systems installed. I live in Heliopolis and I can drink the water from the tap but I do use a filtering system. But when I am in Alexandria I buy bottled water. I’ve lived here over 2 years now and the water has never given me a problem. You’ll be fine and mabrouk on your coming marriage.

Health care here is ancient compared to what you are used to in the States. The good news is there is no prescriptions needed to most medications even antibiotics (everything is over the counter). However, I have no experience with diabetes meds here but I’m sure they are available. I would suggest you bring as much as you are legally allowed to carry. Make sure you bring a prescription from you doctor in the States just to make sure you are getting the right meds. If you are only staying for 2 months it might be smart to bring a 2 month supply and then find a doctor here to consult with. If you want some help locating a doctor, email me through my blog, but I’m sure your fiance can help.
Bottled water is clean and safe to drink. Food is fine just make sure to wash your veggies well.
