My hair is severely damaged from taking chemo drugs for a lung disease. Does anyone have any tips ?

I have to laugh as I read your post.

I remember the days waking up in the middle of the night, with hair in my mouth and falling out in my hands when shampooing. A bit traumatic, I must admit. Too traumatic to continue bearing, I cut my hair very short, about two inches in length all around. Then, the unthinkable occurred. After one particular chemo treatment, suddenly, my hair, my eyebrows and every bit of hair on me suddenly turned grey. I woke up in the morning and I couldn’t believe it! I sank down into the vanity chair and started laughing uncontrollably.

What remained on my head was patches of hair standing straightup amidst patches of baldness. Added to my weight gain and my staggered gait from the chemo, I looked like a hair fried, senior ballooned Chuckey Doll…

It was even grosser when I covered what hair was left with mayonnaise and plastic wrap at night. That helped with it being fried….

You know, it was so funny, I decided to nix the wig…I wore my fried, patchy, grey hair everywhere, as my own personal badge of honor. It looked funny and I looked funny…with my hair, baggy sweats and my bag lady act.

My friends would stop, look at me for a minute, with widened eyes, then I would start laughing and they would join in. It was hilarious and only so because I knew that it was only a matter of weeks before chemo would be over and my hair would soon grow back.

After getting cancer, I found myself laughing about a lot…things are much funnier these daysthan they were during pre-cancer times. I wake up in the middle of night laughing over something hilarious that happened in a dream. I laugh at television commercials too. But, then, I was laughing at myself and it was the most fun I got out of my chemo treatments.

Anyway……try mayonnaise and plastic bags, it will calm it down. Don’t color it for three months after you are off chemo. Don’t perm or wave it for four to six months after you are off chemo. Use very gentle shampoos and conditioners.
