Question : My friend says that she brags about having an eating disorder.?
She says that she has Body Dysmorfic Disorder. A placebo diagnosis, in my opinion. I can tell that she doesn’t. Everyone can tell. But no one wants to tell her the truth. And the funny thing is that she is proud say she has one. I think she just wanted something wrong with her to fit in. But she doesn’t have anything close to an eating disorder. It’s just really annoying that she is that niave and stupid to actually want one.
plus the only time she somewhat had the “symptoms” of an ed was when we were researching them for a project.
What do you guys think?
she went to a doctor and was diagnosed with bdd. That’s why i thought it was a placebo diagnosis. She doesn’t have any of the symptoms other than she thinks she is fat. But i know a lot of other people who think they are too. I can’t say i’ll get her some help because that’s exactly what she wants. To fit in with everyone by haveing a “mental problem” like everyone esle.

I personally think it seems like maybe she’s attention starved, its a scary thing to lie about though. If she brags and the wrong person hears her she could get in alot of trouble, well not trouble per-say but i doubt shed like being locked up in a psych hospital and put on meds to stable her imaginary condition.

I think you should behave as if you 100% believe her and are a sincerely concerned person.
Tell a school counselor or call a crisis hotline or something like that. Or for God’s sake, tell her parents what she is saying (presuming she is a minor).
Yep, she’ll get “attention” when you do it, but believe me…it will all come out in the wash.
ETA: Hon, if the doctor diagnosed her then you’re just going to have to deal with it. Honestly? You sound a bit jealous yourself.

How do you know she doesn’t have a disorder? Sometimes you can’t even tell and that is how it can go undetected for so long. BDD is a psychological disorder that can lead to an eating disorder… but that’s besides the point. If she is pretending to have a disorder, then I would think she wants attention. You say you think “she just wanted something wrong with her to fit in” which is a bit scary because you make it sound like having “something wrong” is cool. Like… she wants to be like all her anorexic friends or something. I say you should help her out if you’re a real friend, whether it be a call for attention or an actual disorder.

Wow, if shes gonna make up shit, she should atleast get her facts right. Body Dysmorfic Disorder (BDD) is a physcotic disorder in which the victum is extreamly concered about a specific body part they have to the point of insanity. 80% of BDD victums attempt suicide. In most cases a BDD victum will shun the public as they are so ashamed that they are eventually isolated from all friends and family. It is EXTREAMLY uncharecteristic of BDD that the victum is open and braggy about there situation. In my opinion, your friend is striving for attention.
Try this:
the next time she brings it up, let her know that you are “extreamly worried about her” and that is she doesn’t get help you will contact a physologist and mental health physician. That should shut her up, unless she is actually serious (very unlikely) in which case, actually get her help. -

Anyone who’s “proud” to have an eating disorder clearly does not have one. Eating disorders are NOT fun, they hurt people and others close to them. If you want to force yourself into thinking you have a diagnosis, you usually stretch the symptoms or modify yourself to what they are. Honestly, I think she just wants attention, so I think the right thing to do would just tell her straight up that she doesn’t have a disorder. If she really does have one, then tell her to get help, because eating disorders should not be taken lightly.
