he says he has diabetes and they haven’t been able to regulate his insulin. 6 month ago he appeared to be fine,even a little chubby. Can this happen this fast? Can drugs cause diabetes like this.?

I think you mean “haven’t been able to regulate his glucose”. There are a lot of variables but diabetes onset can indeed cause a lot of the symptoms you describe. Actually, all of those things happened to me.
Weight loss comes from the body not being able to absorb glucose (insulin resistance) and turning instead to fat energy reserves. This is the leading cause of ketoacidosis. The brain and heart both run almost exclusively on glucose.
Dehydration, I am told, is from the kidneys being overwhelmed by the high blood glucose levels and flushing out what it can (frequent urination). Constant thirst results as well.
I have no idea about the drugs.
Tell him to talk to a doctor etc. etc. etc.

absolutely it can happen that fast. probably drugs didn’t cause it, but we can’t know that for a certainty.
He has been in the honeymoon stage of this. It is nearly impossible to get on a regimen of insulin when the pancreas works sometimes and sometimes doesn’t. It takes lots and lots of testing and talking with the CDE – Certified Diabetes Educator – on how to deal with the vageries of the honeymoon stage..
Hang tight to your friendship! He needs the support of his friends, his good friends that is. He can eat and drink what ever he wants at this point. He will just need to count carbohydrate grams really well and try to out guess his pancreas.
The honeymoon stage lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few years for some people. It depends on how fast his pancreas is dying!
