If on chemotherapy can you still have your cats?
Question : If on chemotherapy can you still have your cats?
My grandmother is going to go thru chemotherapy and my aunt who is taking care of her has 3 cats. My other aunt and cousin are telling her she has to get rid of her cats because of chemotherapy. Is this true. I cant not find it anywhere. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My mom had a cat throughout her chemo and she did just fine. The cat was very important in helping her through it.
I haven’t seen concrete evidence for this, but I’d imagine that it would be because of her chemo causing bone-marrow suppression (suppressing her immune system), which will make her more susceptible to infections.
I can’t see that the cats are likely to be a big risk to her…only a few cat diseases are transmissible to humans…the main problem would be with things like toxoplasmosis, but as long as your grandmother isn’t coming into contact with their faeces, she shouldn’t be at any great risk.
Like the poster above said, she may actually find that the cats are a great comfort to her while she is feeling ill.
I hope that my answer is of some good to you, and hope also that your grandmother’s treatment brings a good result.
