How is ultrasound used to make images of the body?
Question : How is ultrasound used to make images of the body?
I’ve trawled the net, but I can’t find an explanation that is understandable for me. I don’t understand HOW it works. Also, how does ultrasound find weaknesses in metals?
Thanks in advance ![]()

Ultrasound is sent through the body and it bounces off materials of different thicknesses to produce an image of the body. It is used to find cracks in metal casing by being sent through the casing and it bouncing back off the cracks to produce a picture.
Hope that helped
An ultrasound scan is a test that involves taking pictures of the object using sound waves. Pulses of ultrasound are sent out then echo (‘bounce back’) from the object, creating an image.
It can detect flaws and cracks in metal by changes in the frequency of the echo showing in the image.
