with depression (and similiar things like ocd adhd etc etc) they have found now that its to do with signals not getn through and also the seretonin that makes you feel happy which also effects other chemcicals are pushed out through a tunnel like thing then they whiz round to another tunnel and go back in and get ‘reuptaked’…..people with depression they have found do not ‘reuptake’ as many of these special seretonins so those anti depressents that are often called reutake etc etc help to ‘soak’ up the seretonin…i think endorphins come into it as well…..it was all on this realy hard to understand doctors brain surgeon website…..was interesting.
type in google: seretonin reuptake and it might come up -

In one’s brain, there are synapses where messages travel from one synapse to the other by way of brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. When one is depressed, there is an imbalance of brain chemicals and the signals do not get to the synapse as they should. You see, one synapse will release serotonin and if another synapse doesn’t take it in (making the job complete), the first synapse takes it back or re-uptakes it, preventing it from traveling where it needs to go. SSRI’s (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) keep the serotonin from being re-uptaken, thereby leaving it in the brain channel longer so that the next synapse has more time to take it in. Over time, when SSRIs are taken, the brain chemicals correct themselves and depression is alleviated or lessened.

I have been on an anit-depressent for a few years now, and in most cases when people are depressed they don’t really have an answer as to why that is. There is a difference in being upset or down in the dumps for a bit becasue there is a reason for that. What the medicine does is replace whatever chemicals are missing in your brain to balance your system out so you can be at ease. These pills are a very big help but the only problem is that when you first start taking them the dosage might not be right, and it might take up to a few months to get the dosages correct.

Scientists do not know precisely how SSRIs, the most commonly prescribed of the antidepressant meds, work, although they appear to prevent certain nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing the neurotransmitter serotonin. This leaves more serotonin available in the body, which appears to improve mood. The word “selective” is used to describe these medications because they appear to affect only serotonin while leaving other neurotransmitters alone. The blocking action of SSRIs works fairly quickly in the body but the antidepressant effects of the drug may not appear for three to six weeks after the beginning of treatment.
SSRIs are often safer than many other kinds of antidepressants, most notably the tricyclics and the MAO inhibitors. They also are less dangerous if accidentally taken at overdose levels. Finally, they are less likely to trigger seizures or heart problems.

It helps with the chemical imbalance by balancing out your serotonin levels. The horomone that is missing or imbalanced, when we are depressed. These drugs help restore this horomone. They make you feel normal, not high. They help you appreciate life more.
