Question : How can I get assistance with paying for my prescriptions my insurance wont cover?
i am morbidly obese (5’9″-294 lbs)I have insulin resistant diabetes. In my treatment plan I am to take along with my Metformin 2 other drugs to aid in my weight loss BYETTA-and XENACAL. I also have neuropathy as a complication from the diabetes and am prescribed LYRICA. My insurance will not cover the XENECAL for it is a weight loss drug and considered a “frivilous” expense. Nor will they cover LYRICA for it is new on the market .Ineed these meds in order to live a productive life to help loose the weight so i will not be diabetic. I am 45. I want to live until I’m 75. With out these meds ,I could die in 5 years.
The cost of these meds are -XENECAL-$ 230.00 for a 30 day supply
LYRICA-$ 210.00 for a 30 day supply.

Most drug manufacturers have programs in place where they’ll provide financial assistance to you if you contact them directly. Check the websites of the manufacturers of the drugs you take. Good luck.

I also am type 2 diabetic and morbidly obese (6ft 420lb) I used to weigh 530 and for what you pay for those medication I only pay less than $ 200 a month for a meal replacement which keeps my diabetes in control (200). I do this 6 days out of the week and go 1 day and eat whatever I want. I got this idea from the book Body for Life by Bill Phillips.
As far as your costs of what you are paying for these meds I would take the reciepts to who does your tax return and see if you could get that added to your refund.

I am also diabetic and I understand about the high cost of medications… especially when the insurance companies won’t pay.
The best place to start in getting help is at your doctor’s office. Most doctor’s have all kinds of samples of medications lying around (just like the metformin), so just ask. There are there for the patients that need them and you definitely do. My doctor gives me samples of all my meds and it saves me hundreds of dollars a month.
The second place you can possibly get prescription assistance is at your local health department. Call them up and ask if they offer any pharmacy assistance programs. These programs will help you to get your meds at little or no cost, depending on your income.
Check with social services as well. I am not sure of your occupation or income, but they may be able to help if you qualify.

At the end of most prescription medication commercials they mention that astrozenica may be able to help cover the costs. I know I spelled it wrong, but you might want to pay close attention and quick write down that number next time you see a commercial. Also, try calling the manufacturer directly and explaining your situation. Many times pharmecutical companies have organizations that they work with who give low and no cost drugs. Good luck!
