Question : Has anyone ever been prescribed bipolar medication combined with a weight loss aid?
If you were over weight but have bipolar have you ever had a dr. give you a weight loss medication in combination with your bipolar meds? Does it work? Would it be bad side effects?

I take Wellbutrin. It addresses both problems quite nicely.

I am ultradidian bipolar. Yes it would be very bad to prescribe weight loss pills for a bipolar person. They are always some sort of speed!! This will violently swing your moods with booth higher mania and lower depression. Alcohol and caffine are also a problem. They too will accelerate and accentuate your mood swings. I found a high fiber diet with all dairy and almost all meats and all fats removed helped me loose 50 lbs in 60 days. There is a new nedication that is being used to help reduce the weight gain effect of bipolar medications. Ask you Psychatrist!! I believe Berkly is on of the schools that is doing the study. My standard post follows: disregard advice on medications, unless bipolar 1, with hallucinations/serious delusional states: See bipolar disorder, at ezy-build * (below) in section 10, and take the quiz, if unsure, and if the results are positive, ensure you get an expert diagnosis from a mental health professional, not doctors, who are much better dealing with physical ailments, and don’t diagnose complex disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder often enough to develop any real expertise. Bipolar disorder usually involves major moodswings, which occur without apparent cause, and often over many months, or a matter of years, rather than days, as with most people (unless rapid cycling). I’d take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements daily, replacing 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements in the winter months. If you decide to use allopathic (modern Western) medicine, I recommend trying Lithium Carbonate, or Lithium Citrate (regular tests are necessary, for these), before trying the other mood stabilisers, but if you aren’t good at taking medications regularly, drinking adequate water, and keeping up your salt intake, something else may suit you better. Always check out anything first at http://www.drugs.com/, so you will be aware of the risks, and on the lookout for side effects. (Personally, if I wasn’t bipolar type 1, and didn’t experience hallucinations, or serious delusional states, I know I’d first try the orthomolecular and Omega 3 fish oil supplements, vitamins, minerals, and mostly raw food diet, for several months. I was put on something for migraines which was also used for weight loss. I was taking an antidepressant a long with that as well as something for chronic pain. For me, the three of them gave me seizures! If you are not sure, you MUST give a list of all medications you are on to each Doctor you see. Also, ask a pharmacist you know and trust how the medications you are on can interact. Some are not aware of all medications one is on and can lead to serious side effects, even death. I would call your primary Doctor for starters and go from there. Good luck!

My prescriber has given me Adderall for use with my bipolar meds. This helps with my focus problems and helps with the issue of weight gain (which I’ve mostly kept at bay).
The disadvantage is that I must drink more water, and possibly may be more prone to mood swings when I take caffeine.
I’ve taken Adderall with Depakote and Wellbutrin, With Depakote and Lithium, and am now transition into taking it with Lamictal and Lithium cuz the Depakote isn’t doing enough for me during the winter.
