Can you join the military if you have seasonal depression?
Question : Can you join the military if you have seasonal depression?
Someone close to me has Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is basically seasonal depression. She gets pretty down during the spring time for some reason but she’s fine every other time of the year. Her life dream pretty much is to enlist in the Coast Guard, would this make it so she isn’t able to enlist?

depends. if in treatment, or on medication, that’s not good. on the other hand SAD is much different than clinical depression; easy to deal with.
have your friend try this out. start getting up at 5AM. get some bright lights and turn them on in the morning. they make special light boxes, but it’s the same idea. do some stretching, then exercise and go for a run. have a decent breakfast. this is basic treatment for SAD. it is also daily routine for us military. your friend may find that the issue goes away with this sort of activity. if not he/she will not adjust to military life.

Is it something that has been professionally diagnosed? If it hasn’t, and she’s able to function like a normal person even though she’s depressed, she can. Besides, having a goal in mind like joining the Coast Guard and really wanting that may be just what she needs to get her past that. Like the person above me said, if it doesn’t require medication, it doesn’t matter.
