Question : Can my parents legally make me go to treatment for bulimia? Help, please!?
I’m 17 years old. My parents found out that I purge after eating. They sent me to see a therapist (who doesn’t even specialize in Eating Disorders), and after finding out I’ve been doing this over two years, she made me attend an outpatient program for two weeks. I didn’t “improve” so they’re making me go to an inpatient program in another state?!? I’m a senior in high school, I will be 18 in July, I only have a few months of school left- I don’t want to spend these months in a treatment center away from my friends. I’m hardly even underweight- 5’6″, 108lbs. What is that, 6 pounds underweight?!?
How can I make them stop?! I tried to express my concerns but no one would hear it- not even my therapist!!! I’m not even bulimic, I barely have any problem, sure I throw up sometimes but does that make it ok to do this to me?!
Do I legally have to go to this center? Do I have any other options?

You know, I would’ve loved it if my mom had cared this much about me when I was 17. Instead, she was preoccupied with trying to please me, and trying to be my “friend.” So she let me date a 38 year old and drove me to his house sometimes.

You throw up after eating. Part of your disease is the denial you are stating in this letter. You have had outpatient treatment that was unsuccessful. Its not about how much you weigh, its your state of mind. Yes they can send you, and a responsible parent would just as if you needed treatment for cancer or drug addiction. What good will graduating do you when you have starved yourself to death? Go and save your life.

Legally you do not have to go to this center, for sure not.
And of course you have another option – bury yourself straight away.
But to be serious, be happy about your parents that they care so much, appreciate their concern, their help, their support, their love. Even though it is and will be your life, for sure you want to be happy in it, don’t you? So why ruin yourself.
Besides, 6 pounds overweight is nothing, eventually it can assure that your ribs don’t poke out, which in my opinion looks lousy. -

That’s way more than six pounds underweight. Depending on your bones, a good weight for your height is probably at least 120 if not 135.
Your bulimia has probably cost you muscle mass, which has long-term health consequences. Also, in these crucial years of building bone density, yours has probably decreased, making it nearly inevitable that a no-big-deal fall will break your hip or back when you’re older–if you live that long. I’m sure you’ll consider yourself really attractive in your wheel chair or bedridden, paralyzed from the neck down.
But you don’t have to wait to be older and shatter something essential in a fall. Bulimia kills young people. Girls and women (and a few men) *die* from doing what you’re doing. Don’t you want to be alive for the immediate future?
I strongly disagree that you ‘barely have any problem.’ I believe you have a pretty serious problem you are in denial about, and that if you want to have a normal healthy life, it needs immediate and intensive treatment.
And although I’m not a lawyer, I believe your parents have the right to make sure you get that treatment. Go, parents, go!
