Question : Can my parents legally make me go to treatment for bulimia? Help, please!?
I’m 17 years old. My parents found out that I purge after eating. They sent me to see a therapist (who doesn’t even specialize in Eating Disorders), and after finding out I’ve been doing this over two years, she made me attend an outpatient program for two weeks. I didn’t “improve” so they’re making me go to an inpatient program in another state?!? I’m a senior in high school, I will be 18 in July, I only have a few months of school left- I don’t want to spend these months in a treatment center away from my friends. I’m hardly even underweight- 5’6″, 108lbs. What is that, 6 pounds underweight?!?
How can I make them stop?! I tried to express my concerns but no one would hear it- not even my therapist!!! I’m not even bulimic, I barely have any problem, sure I throw up sometimes but does that make it ok to do this to me?!
Do I legally have to go to this center? Do I have any other options?

Lindsay, Lindsay, Lindsay…until you are 17 they can do this. After that you are free to remain in denial and slowly kill yourself all you want.

yes they can you are a minor child
they can also go to the courts the day you turn 18 and tell the courts your bulimic refusing treatment
and have you court ordered to treatment and have you deemed incompetent and have them given full custody of you medically and physicallythey can also be given rights to your money if you had any

your bmi is 17.4
and it should be around 22.0
18.5 to 24.9 is healthy your not healthy
your skin and bones and very gross
keep it up and you will have no friends
no one wants to hang out with the girl thats ugly thin that eats then pukes
your teeth are going to fall out as is your hair
your smell like puke
no guy will want youi am a recovering anorexic
you need to get help or you will die
i was forced into treatment the first time at 18 and guess what it wasnt my idea it was my mom
since i was deemed not able to make my own choices i was forced into therapy
your mom can do it tooas soon as a doctor sees your teeth and weight your no longer going to have a say age wont matter
by throwing up all your food you have proved that you are capable to handling your own life

Go to treatment. Two years of bulimia is not healthy. You are young and need to address this disease before it is too late. I don’t even know you and can tell that your inability to stop purging while in treatment is a glaring sign that you do suffer with bulimia. You have underlying issues that need to be addressed. If I were your parents, I would do the same thing. They obviously love you and don’t want you to die from bulimia. In treatment you will learn more about your disease and see how your denial is a part of the disorder. School can wait. Treatment can’t. Good luck to you and God Bless.

Your parents are responsible for your health so yes, it is legal.
Even if you do not feel you are bulimic, the act of forcing yourself to throw up after meals is an indication that your view of your body is out of kilter. Also, this action can cause long term affects that are NOT associated with weight. It can cause severe damage to both the stomach and the esophagus that may lead to cancer or other ailments in the future. The 114 lbs. level is the MINIMUM level a person should be at to remain healthy…so you have already made yourself less than the healthy person you were intended to be. I call that trouble in the making.
