2010 election: one of 10 children has a mental illness – State by State numbers

through a variety of series 2010, NAMI published by the state government estimates the number of children and young people aged 10-17, reminds publishers, journalists, bloggers and others to ask candidates for public office, the facts about mental illness in their countries and communities address. State by state data is also below.


One child in ten a serious psychological problem, but only a third are treated.
Half of all cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and three quarters from 24 years ago.
On average, eight to 10 years elapse between the time the symptoms of mental illness when they start treatment.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people aged 15-24.
While the Nation? S recession, mental health services for children and young people after devastating state budget cuts. Congress has a responsibility to help strengthen the public mental health systems. Federal mental health block grants were reduced or frozen during the last 10 years.
