Question : Where might I find grants for the purchase of a stair lift for the elderly?
I am in the process of purchasing a new home and all secondary bedrooms are on the second floor. I take care of my grandmother and she is in denial about her ability. So in order for her to move around the house easily and allow her to be close to my daughter I would like to install a lift system on the stairs. But I was wondering if there are any grants available to assist in the purchase of the lift chair.

You should call the medicaid or medicare office. When it comes to the elderly, medicare tends to pay all if not most for lifts, scooters and chairs. If she has supplemental insurance (Blue Cross for example) you contact them.
Grants require that you are doing a study. What you want is for someone to pay for it.
There are grants available – they are called Disabled Facility Grants and will depend on your Local Authority on how these are carried out. In my area the Local Authority uses a Home Improvement Agency that organise the works to be carried out.
Initially you will need to get in touch with Social Services (the Occupational Therapists) in order that they can make a fully qualified assessment of your grandmother’s needs and make a recommendation. It can be a long process, but again it depends on the Local Authority.
