The united states government will pay for your brothers dialysis treatments, but he needs to apply for medicare. And I believe medicare will only pay for the treatments. Once a person is on dialysis, there are many medications that he will be put on such as epogen, iron, vit d and pills that he will need to take to control his phosphorus. To get these medications covered he will need another insurances. I don’t know what state you leave in but meet with the social worker at the dialysis center. They will advise you on what insurance options you have. There is something called a medicare part D plan that is what they call a kidney friendly plan, but there are many part D plans so knowing all the medications your brother has to be will help to determine which part D plan to get on.
Also as far as transplant lists go, the wait is about 6 years long right now, so make sure to get on as many transplant lists as possible. If you have a donor, it goes much faster but there are many tests your brother and the donor will have to go through to see if they are compatable and if the donor is healthy enough to give the kidney.
You will also meet with a Registered Dietitian at the unit to make sure you fully understand the renal diet, because it is very different from a persons diet who is not on dialysis.
Make sure to start planning now because dialysis is very complicated but it will be easier once you met with your dialysis center staff and come up with a plan of action. Good Luck!
Hey there. You can try MedicalBranches in your state. In Texas, UTMB in galveston sometimes lets their 3rd year med students see actual pt. and charge only for hospital stay. try it in your state.
