What are Eating Disorders? According to Barbara Alderete, LCSW, LPC, LMFT, an eating disorder therapist at Texas Health Springwood Hospital, an eating disorder is a severe dysfunctional pattern of eating that affects a persons health. Examples include anorexia, in which a person restricts the intake of food; and bulimia nervosa, in which the person may restrict, but also binges and purges. Typical onset is during teen years. Approximately 3 percent of the population has bulimia, one percent anorexia. Of those, about 90 percent are female. Texas Health Resources www.TexasHealth.org 1-877-THR-WELL
Read Explaining colours to a blind man. Not only will it enlighten many as to what living with a mental illness and an eating disorder is like, it also gives comfort to those sufferers who think there is no hope and that they are alone. It is very informative, sometimes shocking but also very funny in parts. All in all, a good read and highly recommended.
