Russian youth struggle with drink and drug abuse – 27 Feb 08
drug abuse
It’s estimated around one hundred and twenty thousand Russians die each year from drug and alcohol abuse. Now Dmitry Medvedev – Vladimir Putin’s likely successor – has promised to tackle the problem if he’s elected president on March 2nd. But under Putin, Russia’s substance abuse victims have been largely ignored by an administration more keen on promoting its social achievements. In the third of our series on the State of Russia, Jonah Hull reports from the city of Perm in the Ural Mountains about the problem claiming so many young lives.

AlJazeera is known for it`s extremist views when it comes to Russia and Russians. But as many industrialized and developed nations like USA, where 60 millions of US citizens do not even have the basic medical and social right, and 45 million US people are homelles and drug abusers, criminals and HIV positive. Allso Russia has allot of problems. But with advancing technology breakthrues in medicine research, moore money, growing ecconomy, moore strategic goals, many things will be improved better

Offcourse it is. Every developed and industrialized country have collosial problems that need to be resolved with strategic plan and long term metods.
But Russia is the example in mass media world, becouse it is much moore focused than other western countries. When ordinary people in west talk about Russia today, their blood pressure rises for 3 times. And this is the hell of a bomb for mass media storys and nebulosis.

@ZwolfZki How would you explain all the drink & drugs abuse in any other country?? USA?? I was shocked when I have been to the United States, how many poor people without any medical care live there, and how many people take drugs or are criminal.. it was beyond my imagination.. So, I guess, every large country has such problems. And you should not forget, that after the fall of Soviet Union many thousands of people lost their jobs, their homes, medical insurance and everything they posessed.

@aaaaa895 This is REAL NAZI propaganda, nothing else. I dont believe, that you can read any serious scientific article. So, go on, name the “scientist”! Where did you read this?!!!?? I guess, NOWHERE!!! It is in you crank imagination or you heard that at your Nazi-meetings, where you go to regulary, I suppose. A NAZI like you should be in prison or watched by the police, and not writing stupid, primitive bullshit here.

@Katjusha27
The real nazi is you and russian. Today Russia is like Germany in 30s. A scientist? I am a scientist, a working in a research laboratory in Germany for many years, an i see how russians are drinking vodka. Everybody knows that vodka for russian is like a water for a normal person. And this is a fact. Average russian lives in his mid 50s, and one reason for that is alcohol, and that is the fact. The true Nazi is you and your people, people of prostitutes, alcoholic, and mafia.

Crack/Cocaine and beer plagues Europe from Wales to Russia. Drinking and drugs is frowned upon in the Caribbean. Since I moved to London I have never seen such blatant abuse of these substances. Some people here can’t even survive a day without a beer, a cig and a snort of coke. A white classmate in law school tried to convince me that she only does coke “socially”, and isn’t an addict… eventually found out that socially means everytime she’s out with friends.
