i only can get the brand name drugs if there is no generic version. and then even for that, the doctor had to write a special request form to blue cross for it to get covered. they are not going to pay for brand name, sorry.
Each plan will be different. Most plans will have “step therapy” for many (but not all) covered brand name drugs. This means that if a generic is available the insurance company will require that you try the generic first. If the generic doesn’t work, or if you’ve already tried the generic, your doctor can request that the company cover the brand name drug. Any particular drug could have step therapy with one company and not with another so you’ll need to do your homework or find an agent that works with all the major companies in your area to do the homework for you. There is no extra charge using an agent.
