Question : How do I figure out if I have a mold allergy?
I live in an old house that always feels damp. In the past year, I have noticed mold growing in some places. There are spots in the laundry on the sheetrock. I have cleaned them with bleach, but I know there is more than just what I can see. Plus the bathroom always smells musty and there are black spots on the carpet (yeah, the idiot who lived here before put carpet in the bathroom) that I suspect are mold. I have shampooed them, but they come back in a couple weeks. In the past couple weeks, I have started have chest tightness and a constant post nasal drip and sneezing. I thought it would improve after the first frost, suspecting it is just allergies, but it hasn’t and my chest keeps getting tighter. Actually, it seems more like the very bottom of my throat. Anyway, my question is: Assuming the mold is the culprit, If I were to pack the kids up and stay at a nice, clean hotel for a couple days, would I see a quick improvement? If so, then I would know its the mold doing i

It could very well be mold… probably is actually. I’m allergic to mold myself, and it causes those symptoms. You need to be careful, as this kind of allergy can be very serious… and as you have said, it is getting worse. I have on more than one occasion been taken to hospital with a severe, sudden asthma attack due to exposure to mold. One of those times it wasn’t even on walls or surrounding me, it was just a small amount on an old leather wallet that I picked up in my hand… within minutes I couldn’t breathe.
If my experince is anything to go by, then removing the cause (if it is the mold) would bring relief pretty quickly. Years ago when I’d been exposed for a long period of time though, it took about 5 days before I was really breathing normally. I had actually even forgotten what it was like to take a breath that wasn’t laboured. It was such a relief that we left that house. In some houses, no matter what you do to get rid of it, the mold just keeps coming. My mother used to spend all day every day trying to get rid of it, to no avail.
It’s a pretty common allergy really. Definately go and see the doctor about it, and maybe get a referral to an allergy specialist… mostly to make sure that that’s really what it is, and to discuss your options. You don’t want to have to go through what I have. You may unfortunately find though that if it is a mold allergy, moving may be your most viable option.

It is the mould. google black mould and you will see those are the symptoms. and if left untreated can be quite dangerious and even detrimental to your long term health. It is not an easy solution, you have to get rid of all the carpet in the bathroom, and probably replace the flooring underneath unless its cement, you have to actually replace all the wood that has been contaminated by the mould because bleach does not get rid of it as you know. Many houses become condemed because of black mould because the wood carpet everything has to be replaced once contaminated. And you might be able to breath easier..please talk to a health care professional about this..if you continue on in t here you can start to peuk up blood because the mould is getting in your lungs..it can even lead to death. be careful, and good luck, i lived in a place like yours when i was pregnant for about five months, it reaked of musty mildew and i could see the mould in places……i didnt feel the effects as some people dont but everything you are describing sounds like a black mould problem.
