Question : How do I afford my diabetes supplies with no insurance?
There has GOT to be some kind of program for students who have diabetes and go to school full time. I am not going to a regular university so they dont have medical aid. Theres no way in hell I can afford $ 150 a month for insulin and $ 200 a month for test strips or any of that. I was thinking about the everyone benefits program but that only pays a small percentage of the cost. Are poor diabetics just meant to fall over and die or what? I do not think so! What do all you other no insurance diabetics do out there to afford your supplies, any one know of anything at ALL that would help me?

Go to www.pprax.org and you should be able to get your med for free or at a very low cost. Also until you can through the process get your doctor to get you some samples asap. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having with diabetic expenses. It can be quite trying and you hardly have a choice in treating the condition. I hope you have some luck with the suggestions made above.
Heck, even with be best insurance at work, I still pay about $ 1,500 annually for my insulin, strips, and pump supplies. That’s up from around $ 400 annually just last year. Employers and insurance companies are really sticking it to us and we are at their mercy. Politicians seem to pander more to big corporations than the individual constituents. Strange how our medical copays go up several times the pace of inflation each year and our premiums still rise.

The government requires that all drug companies give “X” amounts of drugs to people who need them and cant afford them. While they cant give you test strips and meters…they do have available your insulin or oral medications. Your local doctor’s office can assist you in acquiring this medications. It is geared towards low income people…most are “age unlimited” programs..which means…no matter what your age is…you can still qualify for these programs. Some are just geared towards people on medicare also. That commercial for “Prescription Assistance” is a very good source to get started. While some doctor’s do NOT want to hassle with these programs, they should help their patients out anyway they can! I worked for a doctor’s office for 5 years and I did this for many, many patients who otherwise would have had to choose between food and medicine. I also got testing supplies for them through “Liberty Medical supplies”, but I think you have to get medicare to use them….wouldn’t hurt to check them out though.

I know exactly what you’re feeling. I’m in the same predicament. Pretty much there’s nothing you can do, but get a job that has benefits. Thats what I had to do plus school. It’s really sad because we’re healthy aside from the diabetes(I am), and no one will cover you.But, check into your local health department to see if they offer any low income health benefits. One thing I did was call Eli-Lilly @ 18005456962. They will give you a 3/4 month supply of insulin for FREE. That can help you for a little while. Hope that helps.
