Nicholas Hellmann, MD, Executive Vice President, Medical and Scientific Affairs of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, a statement released in response to AIDS Global Report.

“The 2010 report on universal access to HIV prevention, care and treatment that show today by WHO, UNAIDS and UNICEF to further progress in expanding the Global HIV / AIDS. We are especially due to the increased access to treatment for both pregnant women and children living with the virus and prevent the further expansion of programs for the mother-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) are encouraged, which represents over 90% of new infections in children.

“In countries most affected by the pandemic, the global medical community, more than half of pregnant women (53%) need PMTCT services to reach with anti-retroviral drugs. The fact that only 15% of women had access PMTCT drugs to clear five years ago shows the effects of global commitments to this type of prevention, which has been shown to significantly reduce new HIV infections in infants scale.

“The report also shows a dramatic increase in the number of children receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), with an increase of 29% over the previous year. But in many countries, children still far behind adult access to treatment? less than a third of the children have to benefit in the treatment, and tested only a small proportion of HIV-exposed children shortly after birth. We know that early diagnosis of HIV infection and rapid initiation of treatment are essential in order to save young lives? and without treatment, about half of infected children die before the age of two.

“The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation works closely with many governments in Sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by this disease, and we saw the vital importance of national policy commitments in the fight against pandemic. More and more countries adopt new WHO guidelines for a program on the prevention and treatment of life? as crimes of a single dose of nevirapine is the most effective prophylaxis against HIV and used by an effective treatment for pregnant women with HIV? we continue to see dramatic progress.

“Reaching more mothers and children of high quality and prevention of HIV treatment services is also critical to the overall improvement of maternal health and child survival, two important aspects of the UNA? ™ s Millennium Development Goals.
