Buying discounted contact lenses online safe?
Question : Buying discounted contact lenses online safe?
The contacts I buy at my optometrist are a bit pricey and I’m thinking about ordering contacts from a website but they’re about 1/2 of the optometrist’s price. Are they safe? And why are they discounted?

The reason why the cost of contact lenses if far less online is because they do not have as many overhead costs – as in they do not have to pay additional costs for opticians fitting time, rent on a shop, etc. Therefore they do not need to increase the price of their lenses to make the same amount of profit.
As long as the lenses you are thinking of buying are manufactured by the same people as the lenses your optometrist has fitted you with, there will be no problem at all, as the quality is ensured by the people who have manufactured the lense, and not the people who are selling them.
Just ensure you have regular checks with your optician to keep a check on the health of your eyes and your prescription validated
When you buy contact lenses through your optometrist, you also pay for a care system that ensures you are properly trained in insertion and removal, proper care and cleaning procedures, and wearing pattern of your lenses. This schedule is customised to every patient (if your optometrist is diligent). Just because the contact lenses last for a month does not mean you can wear and sleep in them the whole month. That’s just stupid – but you would know that if you received the proper health care from your optom.
This personalised service is not provided by internet suppliers (hello, they’re just unqualified random people who you never actually make contact with!) and therefore it is strongly NOT advised to buy contacts over the internet. Although appealing to your credit card, it is honestly not worth the risk to health of your eyes.
Ulcers, allergic reactions and infections lead to a future inability to wear contact lenses or permanent corneal damage. The risks FAR outweigh the paltry benefits of a few saved dollars of internet purchasing.
Plus, how can you be assured of the quality of the contact lenses received on the internet? There is no warranty or quality control (unlike getting them through your optom) and therefore you further even more the risk to your eyes.
In summary, don’t do it. It’s not worth it.
If they are too expensive for you, schedule an appt with your optom, who will be happy to look at other less expensive options for you. There are many thousands of contact lens brands out there. Do not assume to know more about them than your optom, and don’t be afraid to ask!
