Pretty much. But the exact amount of carb restrictions can vary a lot based on what type of medication the person is on. For example, my son has type 1 diabetes and can eat pretty much anything he wants because he is on an insulin pump. Common sense tells him not to go crazy and eat cake and candy and regular soda.
My mom, has type 2 and takes oral medication and just needs to reduce her carb intake, but her doctor did not giver her a specific number, just advised to stay away from starchy veggies, breads, sugar and other high carb foods as much as possible.
The Atkins diet, Sugar Busters and the South Beach diet are all low carb programs (and there are a hundred others, but these are widely available). I believe Weight Watchers also offers a low carb program.
These diets can give you some ideas, but I think most people do not stick with them too well or we’d all be thin!!
Well, docs recommend that we all eat healthy food that is good for EVERYONE, but in terms of strict glucose control, no.
Type ones, especially those on MDI or a pump have a lot more flexibility. She says as she sips wine and eats chocolate with a blood glucose level of 103 mg/dl and holding steady. The world sang the day the insulin pump was invented.
