What kind of doctor should be seen, if you suspect osteoporosis?

I take care of an elderly man with hip and back pain. Let him see rhematologist, or is there another doctor that would be more appropriate?

He should not need a specialist to get good treatment for osteoporosis. My family MD has been ordering my bone scans and prescribing my osteoporosis meds for 2 yrs now. Save his money for the meds…they are expensive.

Start out with a generalist or internist. They should be capable of initiating the workup and therapy on their own. If they find they need help they can refer to a rheumatologist after the initial workup is done, thus saving some money and resources.
