Why do people with Aspergers Syndrome have a higher divorce rate?
I have started dating a woman, 28 years old, that told me she has Aspergers. I have read some into it online. I really like her, but am kind of cautious about getting into this relationship any more seriously untill I know more about this condition.
I think lots (most) people with Aspergers syndrome have a hard time communicating with people, especially in regards to emotion. Aspergers is a kind of high functioning autism (not sure if thats the correct way to say that sorry).
Basically they usually understand how emotions/feelings work and stuff like that but have a hard time dealing with them in social situations/real life. That can lead to difficulties in relationships when they don’t understand how their partner is feeling, or don’t react in a “normal” manner to the partners emotions. Also, like the previous answer says, subtlety in conversations and also certain social cues (“you’re annoying me” type gestures, flirting, eye rolls, whatever) can be hard for them to pick up.
There are varying degrees of Aspergers, and people can get specialized therapy to deal with it so it doesn’t affect them as much. I guess it could have an impact on your relationship or not? It just depends on the particular person I guess. Maybe talk to someone who knows someone in real life who has it, or ask the woman to tell you more about it and how it affects her if you’re comfortable doing that?
